The program of the MAM continues and again yesterday afternoon high value conferences took places. Prof. J. Rhett Mayor, Assistant Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology (USA) presented the results of their studies on micromachining (just one conference that I decided to highlight). Obviously we all know the cutting edge of inserts or tools, but when we come to machine very small parts, it appears that the cutting edge isn’t that sharp… in fact we cut with a round cutting edge. What (…)

The problem-solving insert
In the bar turning industry, countersinking and turning operations with a single tool are routine. Unfortunately, depending on the material, traditional X-geometry inserts (Parisian cut) are not always ideal for dealing with long and bulky swarf fragments. Applitec now presents a new family of inserts combining the machinability benefits of X inserts with the ‘chip rolling’ capability of ISO inserts: The Top-Line range of ZX geometry inserts. Applitec is a company that listens to its (…)

Recent progress in the decorative black PVD coatings
Black coatings have been very popular for some years in the field of watchmaking, but also eyeglass frames, leather goods, writing instruments and jewellery. Few black coatings are made by electroplating (black chrome, black nickel, black gold, black rhodium ...) but the majority is made by dry and in particular by the DLC technique (Diamond Like Carbon). Progress on conducting coatings: The SEM photo shows that the developed coating has a fully columnar structure, which is confirmed by (…)
