At the EMO Hannover 2011, held from 19 to 24 September, the machine tool industry will for what is already the fourth time be participating in a fair under the Blue Competence trademark. “Enabling Sustainability for Manufacturing” is the watchword for 30 companies from this sector and its close relatives in terms of production technology who in Hall 16, Stand E04, will be showcasing their solutions for sustainability in industrial production processes. The principal focus will be on the issue of energy-efficiency. The stand is being organised by the EMO organiser VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), Frankfurt am Main.

{} “We are thus underlining the commitment of Europe’s machine tool industry to the issue of eco-design, which will be given very meticulous attention by the sector in the years ahead”, explains Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Executive Director of the VDW. At the shared Blue Competence stand, the companies will be showcasing solutions with which they downsize ongoing operating costs for their products and at the same time achieve beneficial ecological effects. Exemplified by a machining centre whose development was subsidised by the German Federal Ministry for Education and research (BMBF) under the aegis of a research project, the stand will spotlight how energy consumption levels at individual subsystems can be simultaneously recorded in various machining steps. This enables the biggest energy-consumers to be identified, which is essential for reducing the energy consumption of the machine as a whole by appropriate measures or precautions. Optimisation packages for hydraulic units will be presented, for example, that depending on the definition of the initial status exhibit energy savings of up to 80 per cent.

Likewise, the Blue Competence trademark, which the VDW premiered to the public in 2009, is not restricted to the machine tool industry. Quite the contrary: since the middle of this year, it has been established by the VDMA for the entire mechanical engineering sector under the motto of “Engineering a better world”.
To complement the VDW’s shared Blue Competence stand, more than 30 companies who are already members of Blue Competence will be using the EMO Hannover 2011 as a platform to showcase their special solutions and options for sustainability and energy-efficiency on a stand of their own. Alliance Members have signed up to the conditions of use for Blue Competence, and thus affirmed their responsibilities to the natural environment and climate protection. They are ready to enter into an active dialogue on this with customers and vendors.
